Since 1904, four generations of Kundes have lived, worked and produced grapes on the same property in the Sonoma Valley. Founder Louis Kunde immigrated to California from Germany in 1884, and in 1904 he bought Wildwood Vineyards, which had first been planted in 1879. The present Kunde family ranch in Kenwood encompasses 2,000 acres and stretches for a mile and a half along the Sonoma Highway and extends from the valley floor, sloping up into the mountains. The Kunde family recently built a new winery on the site of an historic old barn, imitating the barn's style. To age their wine, the Kunde's created more than 32,000 feet of tunnels in the hillside directly behind the winery, providing and ideal environment for storing wine naturally. At the farthest reaches of the tunnels, a spacious tasting room has been carved into the rock. Furnished with huge tables and benches - handcrafted of timbers saved from the original old barn - the room is surrounded by scenic vineyards that slope down to the picnic grounds, where tasters can enjoy a picnic lunch.
12:15 pm VJB Vineyards & Cellars (Taste with lunch stop)
Sonoma's newest and one of the smallest production wineries in the valley. Our boutique, family owned winery specializes in small, select lots producing just 3,000 cases a year, which are sold exclusively from our Tasting Room and through our Wine Club. Our family is dedicated to a meritage of two passions; the making of extraordinary wines and unforgettable memories. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Barbera & Syrah. (Lunch is on own)
1:30 pm Chateau St Jean (Taste)
Chateau St. Jean is set against the lofty Sugarloaf Ridge, with beautifully manicured grounds that belie the fact that this is indeed Sonoma. Though the chateau was built in 1920, it was only in 1973, when the winery was established, that the estate became an attraction. Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Merlot at the tasting, picnic tables, barrel-tasting events, blending lessons and well-priced editions keep visitors flocking here all year.
2:15 pm Ledson Winery (Taste)
This remarkable winery, known as the "Ledson Castle" by locals, is an architectural showpiece. In addition to the masterful building design, the winery hosts a fully stocked gourmet marketplace and three beautifully appointed tasting bars where guests can enjoy samples of Ledson's award winning wines.
